Hand Knotted
Rugs are constructed on upright looms made of vertical warp and horizontal weft strings. Pieces of yarn are tied onto the warp to produce the pile of the carpet. A 9’x12’ in one of our collections will contain between 850,000 – 1,00,000 hand tied yarn knots. The weaving process for a 9’x12’ rug takes about 1100 hours. The finishing process, which includes washing, blocking, shearing the pile to an even height, wrapping the selvedge (side cords) and several other steps adds another 300 hours. By the time this carpet reaches your space, as many as 150 people have participated in some step of this process. Quality of production is inspected daily.
MATERIALS
Wool Yarn: Our high quality long fiber New Zealand wool is:
- Scoured - cleaned of excess lanolin and foreign materials,
- Carded – combed to align the fibers, and;
- Spun – formed into yarn.
Handspun yarn has varying diameter along its length, which takes dye unequally and produces a “nubby” or textured look in the finished rug. This variation in dye absorption yields a pleasant color gradation across the rug that cannot be achieved using machine-spun wool.
Machine spun yarn has uniform diameter, which takes dye evenly and produces an even color and smooth finish.
